Funny story: years ago, I interviewed a candidate for an open technician position. I followed my usual script — show him the way we operate and demonstrate why this is superior for him. There’s a catch or hidden script, too. We make it clear that common bad practices, bad habits, and especially bad business have no place in our shop. The idea is that this will filter out a bad fit and excite a good one. Well, one technician got me. I offered him a second interview, and his answer was, “I’m not interested in working for your ‘uppity shop.’”
His intention was to insult us — but it actually sharpened our view of ourselves. Here was a tech, mid-career, rejecting our advocacy approach. If anything, we hardened our resolve. Was it really an insult? Well — yes — but for clients, these same standards attract the ones who share our philosophy, and that’s why I keep the joke alive.
