Volvo

Volvo – A Hallmark of Sweden

When you see a Volvo, you’re seeing more than just a car; you’re seeing a philosophy on wheels. At Gertie’s Garage, we have a deep appreciation for the engineering and the “why” behind these vehicles.

The Story of the Stripe

The diagonal stripe on the grille is one of the most recognizable icons in the world. Many believe it represents Volvo’s greatest gift to humanity—the 3-point seatbelt—but it actually predates the belt by 30 years! In a display of classic Swedish practicality, the stripe was originally just a metal rod used to mount the logo to the radiator of their first model, the ÖV4, in 1927.

The logo itself—the circle with an arrow—is the ancient symbol for Iron. It’s a nod to the fact that the world’s finest steel has always come from Sweden, a tradition of strength that continues in every Volvo we service today.

The Principles: Lagom & Omtanke

Volvo is defined by two beautiful Swedish concepts:

  • Lagom: Often translated as “the right amount is best.” This is the source of Volvo’s unique charm—quality without the flash. It’s why Volvo seats are famously lauded as the best in the industry; Volvo worked directly with orthopedic surgeons to ensure they weren’t just luxurious, but healthy for your body.
  • Omtanke: This means “caring” or “consideration.” It’s the reason a Volvo interior feels like a sanctuary and why the company gave away its seatbelt patent for free so that everyone, regardless of what they drove, could be safe. They didn’t just build a car; they built a way to look after people.

A Personal Connection

My love for these cars goes back to my first mentor, a brilliant Danish technician named Dave Christensen. Whether he was diagnosing a complex electrical gremlin or—as I like to imagine—carving a pair of traditional wooden shoes, Dave taught me the Scandinavian way: Do it right, make it last, and care about the person behind the wheel.

My wife (a Scandinavian beauty in her own right) and I had the pleasure of visiting Sweden a few years ago. Much like with her, I couldn’t help but fall in love with the country. That connection even extends to how we run our shop; Gertie’s proprietary management platform is built on a principled Swedish technology called MDriven.

Why We Love Servicing Volvos

As technicians, it’s a pleasure to work on cars whose engineering remains faithful to their cultural ideals. There is a comforting consistency in how they are built. In Sweden, they have a saying for the “dream life”: “Volvo, Villa, Vovve” (A Volvo, a house, and a dog).

At Gertie’s Garage, we’re here to make sure your Volvo stays on the road so you can keep enjoying that balanced, happy life.
